Most of the funding for addiction treatment services in Ontario comes from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Ontario's addiction treatment services also receive some funds from the federal government, other provincial ministries, the United Way and private sector funders. The majority of funding for addiction services is administered by the Ontario Substance Abuse Bureau and is responsible for managing and coordinating the province's addiction treatment system (source: Ontario Substance Abuse Bureau (1999), Setting the Course).
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) acts as the provincial resource for the addiction treatment system in Ontario. CAMH is the largest mental health and addiction organization in Canada. CAMH has central facilities located in Toronto, Ontario and 26 community locations throughout the province. Services provided by CAMH include (1) assessment, (2) brief early interventions, (3) residential programs, (4) continuing care and (5) family support. For more information on CAMH see below.
With the recent introduction of Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN), a Focus on Addictions and Mental Health: Review of LHIN Integrated Health Service Plans is a review of the LHIN plans for addiction and mental health. The report was prepared by Addictions Ontario, the Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Ontario Federation of Community Mental Health and Addictions Programs. The purpose of this review was to assess the extent to which these plans address addiction and mental health issues.
The criteria for assessing the Integrated Health Service Plans were based on the critical success factors for mental health and addictions identified in the partnership's 2005 position paper "Strong Provincial Focus for the Addictions and Mental Health Sector in Ontario"
