Walkerton Considers Meth Watch and Drug Court

Federal Crown attorney Clayton Conlan said efforts are under way to establish a dedicated drug offences court as a pilot project in Walkerton.
It would be similar to the mental health court diversion program now operating in the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton and Owen Sound, Conlan said.
“We hope that if these people address the actual problem, which is the drug addiction problem, then they won’t commit further offences, they won’t be back in court,” Conlan said in an interview Monday.
Conlan said such drug offences courts exist elsewhere in Ontario, including London, Toronto and Stratford, to help tackle addiction issues which often lead to crime.
His comments came Monday during an interview at a Chesley gathering called by the Grey Bruce Crystal Meth Task Force. A Meth Watch program was launched, which encourages local retailers to limit theft and suspicious sale of over-the- counter ingredients used to make methamphetamine.
I f the drug court is created, look for it in six months or so, running likely one afternoon a month in Walkerton court, Conlan said.
The Meth Watch program and the drug charge diversion initiative are in response to the local task force’s examination of what appears to be a big methamphetamine problem in parts of Grey-Bruce.
